چکیده

To reduce the computation times required for rendering animations, a new incremental raytracing method that computes only the changed parts of images in an animation sequence is proposed. This method is integrated into a parallel version of the POV{Ray raytracing package implemented on a network of workstations using the MPI message passing interface. The parallelization relies on a manager/worker scheme which incorporates dynamic task assignment to achieve load balancing. The results of several experiments indicate that the incremental raytracing method yields a reduction of computation time roughly proportional to the number of changed pixels in a particular animated scene. Almost linear speedups are obtained for the parallel versions running on up to 18 workstations .

An introduction to load balancing for parallel raytracing on HDC systems

Heterogeneous distributed computing (HDC) systems, which exploit the aggregate power of a network of workstations and personal computers are an inexpensive alternative to the dedicated parallel supercomputing systems. As these systems are widely available in academic and industrial environments, it is becoming popular to use these computing resources to solve timeconsuming applications. The foc...

Rendering Computer Animations on a Network of Workstations

Rendering high-quality computer animations requires intensive computation, and therefore a large amount of time. One way to speed up this process is to devise rendering algorithms which reduce computation by taking advantage of image characteristics, such as frame or temporal coherence. Another way is to run the rendering process on specialized or enhanced hardware, such as a multiprocessor mac...

Profile-Based Load Balancing for Heterogeneous Clusters

Cluster computing is becoming increasingly popular for providing cost-effective and affordable parallel computing for day-to-day computational needs [2, 11, 16]. Such environments consist of clusters of workstations connected by Local Area Networks (LANs). The possibility of the incremental expansion of clusters by incorporating new generations of computing nodes and networking technologies is ...

Impact of Adaptivity on the Behavior of Networks of Workstations under Bursty Traffic

Networks of workstations (NOWs) are becoming increasingly popular as an alternative to parallel computers. Typically, these networks present irregular topologies, providing the wiring flexibility, scalability, and incremental expansion capability required in this environment. Similar to the evolution of parallel computers, NOWs are also evolving from distributed memory to shared memory. However...
